7/9/2019 at Three Way Chevrolet

6:39 P.M.  Meeting called to order by Bob Vella.

46 members in attendance.  2 Guests (Emily Ames and Ken Weir)

Bob Vella handed the gavel over to newly-elected President Larry Young.  Larry thanked our sponsor, Three-Way Chevrolet, for sponsoring us by providing us a donation every month and allowing us to meet in the current room.

Flag Salute – Led by Dave Kielty. Dave introduced Emily Ames (Larry’s granddaughter) who sang the national anthem.

Oath of Office:  Ken Weir, Bakersfield City Council Member, swore in the new officers: Larry Young, President;  Dave Kielty, Sergeant At Arms; and Elizabeth Zaninovich, Public Relations.

Larry Young welcomed the guests and new member, Matt Collins, who has a 2017 Stingray.

Birthdays and Anniversaries:  Acknowledged by Larry Young.

Prizes & Refreshments:  Brought by Tony Ennis and Chevy Garza.

Minutes: Liz Zaninovich motioned to approve the minutes from last month’s meeting.  Melanie Mitchell made a second.  Motion passed.

Larry Young/President:  At the Board of Directors meeting last week, Danny Ellison stepped forward and volunteered to be the Events Coordinator again.

Kim Miller/Secretary:  Nothing to share

Betsy Slauson/Membership: Received several membership renewals tonight.  Those that have not renewed yet need to do so soon.  Thank you to those that went down to Don’s memorial service.  Pictures were shared of their car.

Carl Lange/Treasurer Report: Carl was not present but a balance of $19,676.09 for both accounts was shared with the membership.

Dave Kielty/Sergeant At Arms: Dave was introduced as the new Sergeant At Arms.

Virgil Miller/Webmaster: Nothing new to present.

Adrian Medina/Social Media:  If you don’t do Facebook, try it.

Danny Ellison/Events –  The Loading Chute Fun Run raised $135 for the Christmas party.  The fund now has a total of $1,246 in it.  The Summer Solstice event raised $305, $67 from The Pizza Press and $241 from The Habit Burger Grill.

The following events are coming up:

7/11/19 – Chuy’s Cruise-in.  Will have root beer floats.

7/13/19 – Greenhorn Grill with a stop in Glennville and wrap up at Rosemary’s Family Creamery in Bakersfield.

7/17/19 – Corvette Owner’s Breakfast at The Links at Riverlakes Ranch.

7/26/19 – The Firehouse/Rosedale Station.  A night of car camaraderie.

9/28 & 29/19 – Annual Paso Robles Wine Run.  Information for signing up and making reservations is on the website.

MyCorvette facebook page is a private facebook page for club members only.  If you haven’t checked it out or joined it, please do so.

Virgil displayed one of the new portable banners that was purchased for the club.

Vettes 4 Vets Car Show – Flyers have been printed for the event.  There are several versions available:  trophy sponsor, sponsor application, vendor application and a thank you/receipt for donation version.

Annie Bailey said she will get donations for goodie bags if we decide to do them.

Michael Rouw received a 58” TV donated by Banducci’s Family Pumpkin Patch for the upcoming car show.

New Business – Larry Young presented Bob Vella with a fuel pump trophy as a gift from the club for all his work as president. 

Reminder that Annie Bailey is responsible for snacks next month and Dale Frye has prizes.

Larry Young thanked everyone for their votes and for attending the meeting tonight.

Cher Silliman shared that the Pederson Automotive Museum in Los Angeles is hosting a Zora Duntov Tribute Weekend 7/27-7/28/2019.  More information can be found online.

John Silliman reminded everyone that there will be a Camarillo Run on 8/17/2019 to the Outlet mall in Camarillo.

Danny Ellison advised that on 7/18/2019 at 7:10PM Three-Way Chevrolet will be live streaming the C8 reveal.  Wylon is the Three-Way contact.

Dick Compton/Second Vice-President:  Talked to Mike Thomas of 3-Way Chevrolet about Sponsorship for the car show.  Thomas will get back to us.

Betsy Slauson/Membership – Not here.  Bob reminded everyone that July is membership renewal month.  Rate is $65/couple and $55/individual.

Carl Lange /Treasurer Report– Carl presented the monthly report indicating $18,628.75 total funds in the accounts.

John Silliman/Sergeant At Arms – Passed out a flyer by Tony Ennis as a Save The Date for the Wine Run in the Fall.

Virgil Miller/Webmaster – Nothing new to present.

Adrian Medina/Newsletter – The Event Chronicles is on the website and has been updated.

Danny Ellison/Events –  Another $240 was gained at the Seven Oaks Brunch for the Christmas Party Fund.  The fund now has a total of $1,111 in it.

Reminder that on the first Thursday of every month the club has committed to representation at Chuy’s Cruise-in.  The first Thursday of next month is the 4th of July.  No one will be attending.  We will move our participation to the second Thursday, July 11th.

On Thursday 6/19/2019 8:00AM the Corvette’s Owner Breakfast will be held at Links at RiverLakes Ranch Clubhouse.  The menu includes a full breakfast.

Summer Solstice will be celebrated on 6/21/2019 at The Habit at Brimhall Rd/Allen Rd.  A flyer has been posted on the website and emailed to members with a bar code.  Use this bar code when you place your order and the club will get 20% of the sale.  Share this flyer with family, friends or anyone else who may go to The Habit on 6/21.

Veterans Charity Car Show – Virgil Miller told us we need more volunteers in order to put on this car show.  The sign-up sheet was passed around again.  The Olive Drab Car Club will be helping us with parking.  It was suggested we contact and possibly get help from the Sheriff’s Office and Bakersfield Police Department Explorers.   Virgil also made a push for assistance obtaining raffle prizes and sponsors.

New Business/Bob Vella – Bob relayed his appreciation for club members who helped make his time as President enjoyable.  Next month Tony Ennis is responsible for snacks and Chevy Garza will bring prizes.

Ballots were passed out and returned for counting.  While tabulations were taking place, a couple of videos of events from the past month were shown.

Minutes – Tim Garcia motioned to approve the minutes from last month’s meeting.  Adrian Medina made a second.  Motion passed.

Larry Young/First Vice President  – Nominating committee has completed the ballots.  There are two running for president and only one running for vice-president.  The Public Relations and Events Coordinator positions need to be filled.  Larry will not be here next month due to prior plans.

Betsy Slauson/Membership – We have added four new members bringing the total to 129 members.  Membership renewals, at $75, are scheduled to go out.

Carl Lange /Treasurer Report– Carl presented the monthly report indicating $17,223.62 total funds in the accounts.

John Silliman/Sergeant At Arms – Collected for no name badges and reminded everyone to sign the attendance log. 

Virgil Miller/Webmaster – A classified section has been added to the website.

Adrian Medina/Newsletter – The newsletter has transformed to a blog on the website.  Encouraged everyone to view it.

Danny Ellison/Events –  The Chili Cook-off on 5/18/2019 has been cancelled along with the Santa Paula run on 6/2/2019.  Danny advised that $871 has been raised to offset the members’ price of the annual Christmas Party.  Michael Rouw gave Carl an additional $500, raised at the McNally’s event, to go towards the Christmas Party fund.

Brunch of Corvettes at Seven Oaks Country Club will be on 5/26/2019. We received permission to have six of our vehicles displayed on the grass at the event.  The Millers (C1), Terry Romanoff (C2), Annie Bailey (C4), Roger Buckels (C5), Ron Burrow (C6) and Dale Frye (C7) need to be there by 1:30 to get their vehicles in place.

On the first Thursday of each month during the summer, Chuy’s will be hosting a cruise-in for car club members.  We encourage everyone to attend.  Additionally, the Corvette Owner’s Breakfast at the Links at Riverlakes Ranch will be tomorrow, 5/15/2019, and the Summer Solstice at the Habit Burger Grill on Calloway Dr. on 6/21/2019.

Danny has created a My Corvette – Members Only page on Facebook. Contact him if you are interested in more information.

On 6/8/19, there will be a car show at Chuys put on by Larry Thomas.  This is information only but would encourage attendance.  Also, The Firehouse on Calloway Dr. will be hosting a car club gathering on Friday nights from 6:00-10:00.  The first one will be on 5/17/2019.  More options for more fun!

Veterans Charity Car Show – Virgil Miller reminded us we need sponsors for the car show, please send him any leads. California Pinups & Patriots will be handling the 50/50 raffle and will have a Little Miss Corvette contest. The Olive Drab Drivers will help with parking in exchange for entry fees.

New Business/Bob Vella – Bakersfield Car Club Council has dropped the Corvettes of Bakersfield.  Bob presented synopsis of his meeting with the Council.  Virgil motioned that COB withdraw, formally, from the BCCC.  Mark Newton made a second.  There was discussion.  BCCC kicked us out, we accept.  All in favor, no opposition.

Gambler’s Classic – The Riverside Hotel contacted Bob regarding the event and asked if we still wanted the reserved dates.  Bob asked those in attendance if anyone was interested in pursuing this.  No hands.  Bob will notify the Riverside Hotel of our decision to decline.

Next month’s refreshments will be handled by Dale Frye and the Brotts will handle the prizes.

Carl advised we have 12 spots reserved for next year’s Streets of Bakersfield.  Ten are still open.  Contact Carl if you are interested.

Ceramic coating drawing will be held at the Christmas Party.  The Wine Run, handled by Tony Ennis, will be on 9/28/2019.

33 members in attendance.

President, Bob Vella – Welcome to Nomination Night and thank you to our sponsor Three-Way Chevrolet for sponsoring us and allowing us to meet in the current room.

Flag Salute – Led by John Silliman.  Prior to the pledge, John asked for a moment of silence for Trudy Frye whom we lost this past month.

Birthdays and Anniversaries:  Shared by Bob Vella

Getting To Know You:  Spotlight on Bill Dean.

Minutes –Larry Young motioned to approve the minutes from last month’s meeting.  Denise Hollister made a second.  Motion passed.

Streets of Bakersfield – Approximately $28K was made at this event.  Corvettes of Bakersfield netted $4,000 to go to Wounded Heroes of Kern County.  Planning is already in the works for 2020 Streets of Bakersfield.  Does COB want to participate again?  More volunteers will be needed.  In the future, Streets of Bakersfield is limiting the number of participating clubs to six (6) to keep the final donations larger for each club. 

The majority of members voted for the club to participate in 2020.  It was decided to stay with Wounded Heroes of Kern County as the receiving charity.  Bob thanked the liaisons for their contributions last year.  Dave Kielty will go to the Streets of Bakersfield meetings this year on the 3rd Wednesday of the month.

Board of Director Reports

Larry Young/First Vice President  – Larry shared an America’s Sports Car magazine.

Kim Miller/Secretary – March minutes went out via email recently.  A couple of addresses on file were rejected.  She will attempt to address the issue with the individuals.  Make sure your information is accurate with the club.

Betsy Slauson/Membership – We have added two new members bringing the total to 125 members.

Carl Lange /Treasurer Report– Carl presented the monthly report indicating $16,704.03 total funds in the accounts. 

John Silliman/Sergeant At Arms – Collected for no name badges and reminded everyone to sign the attendance log.  Thank you went out to Linda McNitt for acquiring another car coating donation from Unique Auto Spa (formerly Angel’s Car Coating).  The club will continue to sell raffle tickets to members and hold the drawing later in the year, probably at the annual wine run.

Virgil Miller/Webmaster – The website continues to be updated regularly.  Please review as all the current information on the upcoming car show is now on the website

Danny Ellison/Events –  We are holding 50/50 drawings at each event and the monthly breakfasts.  The proceeds will go back to the members to help cover the individual cost of the annual Christmas party.  So far, $266 has been made from two events.

Calendar of Events/Bob Vella – On Monday 4/15/2019, there will be a memorial for Trudy Frye.  The Corvettes of Bakersfield will form corvette procession with their cars.  Sign up sheet is being passed around.

Nomination Committee for the upcoming election consists of Betsy Slauson, Larry Young and John Silliman.  Bob Vella and Danny Ellison will NOT be re-running for their current positions of President and Events Coordinator.  A form for nominations will be passed out before the end of the meeting to be submitted to the committee.

Vettes for Vets – Virgil provided an update for the event.  Registration is ready and posted on the website.  There will be a special judging category for COB members.  Virgil received information from Yolanda Atkinson that she can do t-shirts; specifically, 240 pieces at $3.65 each to include sizes small to X-large.  2XL would be $6.15 each and 3XL would be $7.15.   These could be used to give away to participants or volunteers.  They could even be sold to spectators.  This information will be turned over to the committee for consideration.

Bob Vella showed a couple of videos of recent events.

Dale Frye shared a few words with the members, thanking them for their support to him and his son during recent difficult times.

Minutes –Larry Young motioned to approve the minutes from last month’s meeting.  Denise Hollister made a second.  Motion passed.

Elections – Bob Vella reminded everyone that nominations for the Board of Directors is open in April, there will be a vote in May, announcement of the new board will be done in June and the new board take effect in July.

Street of Bakersfield – Event will be taking place March 14 through March 16, 2019.  This year the COB earnings will go to the Wounded Heroes of Kern County.

Parkfield Run – Jack and Yolanda Atkinson did a pre-run and have made a change in the plans.  Instead there will be a Trembler Run which will entail a run along I-5 towards Coalinga (198) with a lunch in Paso Robles.

Michael Rowe – presented Virgil Miller with a dual picture of a postage stamp with a 1953 Corvette.  Michael came across this picture and thought of Virgil, who owns a 1954 Corvette.  It was presented in appreciation for the work Virgil has done on behalf of COB.

Larry Young/First Vice President  – Thank you to everyone who participated in the Concours de’ Brunch at the Tower Craft Bar & Grill.  Good participation and nice awards.

Dick Compton/Second Vice President – Is anyone interested in doing the Gambler’s Classic?  Need to think about this real quick.  Also, if anyone is interested in being a board member, speak up and let someone know.

Betsy Slauson/Membership – We have 123 members and one new member, Boyd Smith.

Carl Lange /Treasurer Report– Carl presented the monthly report.  February was a light month as far as activity goes.

John Silliman/Sergeant At Arms – Collected for no name badges.

Virgil Miller/Webmaster – Advised the members that the website has been updated with all the upcoming events.

Adrian Medina/Newsletter – Posts events and pictures on Facebook and Flickr.

Calendar of Events/Bob Vella – Current list of activities is posted on the website.  Roger and Lillian Buckles are doing a Cayucos Run on 3/23/2019 and Betsy Slauson is hosting a chili cookoff (people choice) on 5/18/2019.  The Corvette Owner’s Breakfast on the 3rd Wednesday of the month has been moved from Panera/California Ave to the River Lakes Clubhouse.

Refreshments/Raffle – Check the sign-up sheet if you need a reminder as to when you are supposed to bring your items.

Robert Villalobos gave an update on the available corvettes at 3-Way Chevrolet.

Veteran’s Charity Car Show 2019 – Virgil Miller advised he is still waiting for approval from the property management company before he moves forward with any solid planning.  A signup sheet for committees passed out to members.

Bob Vella showed a couple of videos of recent events, Valentines at Frugatti’s and the Reagan Library.  He also reiterated that if we are going to do the Gambler’s Classic, we need interest and volunteers.  If we stick with the prior location, the hotel needs to know by 4/5/19 in order to save it for us.

Minutes –Larry Young motioned to approve the minutes as corrected from last month’s meeting.  Denise Hollister made a second.  Motion passed.

It was asked how we can see a copy of the insurance policy.  Jim Walton is the NCCC Business Manager.  It was suggested to look at the Q&A section of the NCCC website and add a link to the NCCC insurance page on our website.

Bob presented a slide on NCCC benefit.

Guests:  Mike and Shaun DeSchutter.  They have a 1981 corvette which they are restoring.

Board of Director Reports

Larry Young/First Vice President – Streets of Bakersfield is coming up March 14-16, 2019.  We have 12 positions paid for.  Larry and crew will be doing the street numbering.  He reminded everyone that the Corvettes of Bakersfield donated $2,000 in 2017 and $3,800 in 2018 to Honor Flight and this year Wounded Heroes will be our beneficiary.

Also, Concours de’ Brunch will be held on 3/10/2019 at 1:00pm at the Truxtun Craft Bar & Grill.  There will be corvette judging, hoods up.

Dick Compton/Second Vice President – Encouraged everyone to participate.

Betsy Slauson/Membership – We have 124 members.

Treasurer Report – The account total balance is $19,979

John Silliman/Sergeant At Arms – Collected for no name badges.

Virgil Miller/Webmaster – Advised the members that the website has been updated with all the upcoming events.

Adrian Medina/Newsletter – Currently, most of the club’s activities can be seen via Facebook.

Danny Ellison/Events – Calendar of Events was recently sent out and can be found on the website.  It you have any new ideas for Valentine’s Day 2020, email Danny.  COB Breakfast will be on Wednesday 2/20/2019 7:30-9:30am at Panera on California Av.   The Ronald Reagan Library Run is coming up on 2/23/2019.  We will leave the Chevron Station at 99/Taft Hwy at 7:45am and caravan down to Simi Valley via Hwy 99.

New Business

Bob Vellaadvised the Board of Directors voted that effective 6/30/2019 the Membership Dues will change.  New members will be $75/couple and $65/individual.  Renewals will be $65/couple and $55/individual.  All of these include NCCC insurance.

Jack Atkinson presented ideas for additional runs.

          April – Poppy Run to Parkfield via Harris Ranch with lunch at the Parkfield Café.

There was discussion about making the membership list available online.  It was also brought up that there needs to be respect to/for those that don’t want their information out there. The board will address this and try to make something work.

Virgil Miller advised that there has been a possible change in venue for the local car show for veteran charities.  Chuy’s on Rosedale Hwy has shown an interest.  More information to follow.
