CORVETTE-SIXTY YEARS |

Reviewed by PATTI COFFMAN
Corvette - Sixty Years by Randy Leffingwell is a beautiful and comprehensive book on the history of the All-American Sports car – the Corvette. Leffingwell, a renowned photographer, is a thorough Corvette historian. After reading the book, and spending hours looking at the amazing photographs, I came away with a renewed awe and respect for the two Corvettes that sit in our garage.
Truthfully, it was the photographs that drew me in. I anticipated some laborious reading, but within minutes I was reliving a time in 1953 when GM was absolutely serious about building a performance car that, ultimately, touched the world. But, the exciting thing is that the dream car of some really visionary men was uniquely American and has remained so for sixty years. If this sounds a bit patriotic, well, it is!
As I made my way through the almost 300 pages, I was inspired by the continuous improvement and systematic analysis to make things better, smoother, faster…more dynamic, made by the hundreds of designers and engineers. Some of the technology was over my head but as a Corvette enthusiast, I could piece together and appreciate the march towards real innovation.
My husband and I visited the Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, KY in 2003 to pick up our 50th Anniversary Corvette. I experienced some of the same excitement through this book as I felt touring the museum, watching the production and assembly line and being the first to start our new Corvette.
Corvette – Sixty Years is a fine addition to an enthusiasts’ library and is comparable to the 50thAnniversay Corvette Book and Legendary Corvettes. The photographs are, and there is no better word,… amazing. Many are rare and unpublished. As a whole the text and photos grasp and expand on the Corvette culture that we, as owners, understand. The book is well worth the price and will provide hours of enjoyment for owners and admirers of the All-American Sports Car – the Corvette.
