Our History
THE HISTORY OF
CORVETTES OF BAKERSFIELD INC.
A little bit of past and present history about Corvettes of Bakersfield Inc. a non-profit organization. Established in November 1967 as Associated Corvettes a Bakersfield Corvette club and a voting member of The Western States Corvette Council. In 1969 Associated Corvettes brought to Bakersfield and hosted one of the largest Corvette Conventions in the Western States, The Corvette Council’s Pre-convention, with Corvettes coming from as far away as Mississippi, putting Bakersfield on the Corvette map.
With a name change in the early 1970’s the club became known as Corvettes of Bakersfield a better fitting name to promote and enhance the image of Kern County and the City of Bakersfield to the rest of the Corvette Clubs, their Families and our Kern County Sponsors and charities. Today Corvettes of Bakersfield Inc. has a membership of 54 families, meets the second Tuesday of every month at Three Way Chevrolet on California Ave. 7:00 pm, Three Way Chevrolet is our main sponsor and donates their meeting room for our use. Through cub member donation, car shows, runs and BBQ’s, Corvettes of Bakersfield supports several local charities. In 1992 Corvettes of Bakersfield hosted the First Annual Gambler’s Classic Car Show in Lake Havasu Nevada, today Corvettes of Bakersfield is working on our 16th Annual Gamblers Classic to be held in Laughlin Nevada in March of 2008. With over 700 Corvettes attending, the Gambler’s Classic has become the largest anticipated Corvette Show in the Western States. All proceeds collected from the car show are brought back to Kern County for our local charities. To date Corvettes of Bakersfield has donated close to $100,000 to charities in and around Bakersfield. Some of these charities to name have been, Alpha Canine Sanctuary, Arthritis Association Aquatic Center, Avon Walk for Life, Bakersfield College Scholarships, Bethany Homeless Services, Calif. Highway Patrol Widows and Orphans Fund, Calif. Living Museum, Car Quest Cancer Kids Christmas Fund, Crippled Children’s Society, Groynedd Merc Academy, Hoffman Hospice, Homemaker Care Program, Jameson Children’s Center, Kern County Search & Rescue, The SPCA, Love Inc., Muscular Dystrophy Association, Special Olympics, The Friendship House, and Three Way Chevrolet’s Charity Golf Tournament. Corvettes of Bakersfield has also donated to several other local charities on a need to basis when asked.
This year Corvettes of Bakersfield and its 54 families will be celebrating our 40th anniversary with a party, BBQ, charity giveaway and new member drive, held for past, present and future members and our selected charities and invited guests, on October 14th at the Kern River Golf Course Picnic Area, by invitation only. All Corvette owners and their cars wanting to attend can call (661) 835-5021 leaving their name, number, address and type of Corvette they own and a special invitations will be sent out to them, (invitations limited to space).
The charities this year, voted on by our members to receive donations will be, Veterans of Kern County Inc. (Vettes for Vets) helping the families of active duty military servicemen and women, Jameson Children’s Center, Kern County Search and Rescue, CHP Widows and Orphans Fund, Crippled Children’s Society and the SPCA.
Corvettes of Bakersfield Inc. would like to thank all of its members, sponsors, friends and volunteers for all the support, love and time donated to our cause.
